Moscow is the capital of Russia. It is also the largest city in Russia. Moscow is the political, economic, and educational centre of Russia. It is located on the banks of the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. Moscow had been the capital of the former Soviet Union. The city had been destroyed by the Mongols in 1237-38 and it was reconstructed to become the capital of an independent principality. The city became the capital of an empire for the first time towards the end of the 15th century under Ivan III. The city was again burned down in 1571 by the invading Crimean Tatars. Moscow rose to glory in the 20th century.
